Developing leadership skills is an essential aspect of building a successful career and company. Countless skills can be worked on; however, this is a list that focuses on some of the critical leadership skills that will take your career to greater heights.

6 Ways To Develop Leadership Skills

1. Discernment

Taking the time to discern any given situation is essential. Reading the case and judging the current needs, what steps are required and what may come of the decisions and actions will better ensure a successful outcome.

2. Empathy

One of the most remarkable skills that any leaders can possess in their repertoire is empathy. Understanding the feelings of another is significant. When other people feel and believe that you understand their position, the higher the chance that a connection and bond will develop – the deepening of a relationship better ensures commitment to work together.

3. Self-Awareness

Understanding your motives, values, strengths and goals is essential. Knowing which thoughts and tendencies you have, the more thoroughly you can adapt to potential pitfalls and the necessary steps towards success. When dealing with conflicts and other challenges, you can separate your views from what others are doing and saying. The clearer your understanding and thinking, the wiser your decisions can be.

4. Integrity

Acting with integrity is essential in great leaders. Warren Buffet was once quoted as saying:

“Somebody once said that in looking for people to hire, you look for three qualities: integrity, intelligence, and energy. And if you don’t have the first, the other two will kill you. You think about it; it’s true. If you hire somebody without [integrity], you really want them to be dumb and lazy.”

There is a lot of validity in this statement. People with integrity can be trusted to make wiser decisions and do what is best for others in any given situation. If a person with integrity makes a mistake, this person will take full-ownership.

5. Inspire Others

Inspiring others to act is powerful. Listening to your colleague is key; sometimes, this is all that is needed for the person to move forward. Other times adding in encouraging a direction and effectively delivered course correction can be all it takes to get people moving. It isn’t always a rousing inspirational speech that is needed. Addressing the individual can be enough.

6. Resolving Conflicts

Resolving conflicts swiftly is essential. If the dispute is given time to fester, it will cause more significant issues. No matter how difficult the situation is, it must be dealt with quickly. Speak to those involved and encourage an open and direct conversation. Establish repair at that moment and the next steps to avoid similar conflicts moving forward.
