Sailboat navigating at sea

We are clearly in an unprecedented time. There does seem to be an element of fear and anxiety for what the future holds for ourselves, our loved ones, and our businesses. As much as anxiety can creep in, it is important to stay present and calm; in time, with the correct steps taken, this pandemic will pass. In the meantime, it is essential to stay home and minimize physical contact with others.

In this time of uncertainty, I think of a few key aspects that I try to keep in mind to help navigate through this time:

Empathy:

First and foremost, I consider those who are directly impacted by what is happening, for example, doctors, nurses, support staff and pharmacy workers. And, I want to make this clear that many others may go overlooked at this time, like those working the cashier at the grocery store, those stocking the shelves with our food, the list goes on. Appreciating those who support the essential aspects of our lives that we may take for granted at times. This impacts everyone at some level. I’m also incredibly aware of those who are living paycheque to pay cheque – it’s times like these that can truly test our mettle.

Resiliency:

Humans are incredibly resilient. I mean this from the most functional and most straightforward of ways. We have persevered through a lot over the ages. This is yet another challenge for us to face. We can get through this, and we will, in time. Asking yourself what matters most during this time is key. Looking at your simplest needs is incredibly important. Acting intentionally from this place is a great way to build resiliency. The usual distractions of society fall by the wayside when life is put into perspective. This is a wonderful time to focus on what values matter to you most. It is powerful when you focus on what matters to you daily, and it’s a great way to be in the moment and grateful for what matters most in your life. An example from my own experience: I choose to focus on staying in touch with those I love, have only the food that I need, moving my body, awareness of my thoughts, and focusing on my belief that we will navigate this in due time.

Courage and Wisdom:

Acting and leading with courage and wisdom is key, especially in times like these, when there are many differing opinions bandied about and a lot of fear and uncertainty. Being mindful of how you approach your decisions is especially important as the immediate impact can be more significant in a time like this. Take the necessary time to reflect and consider the potential implications of your choices on others and yourself.

Community:

We are all in this together. Reach out to those you care about (phone call, text, FaceTime/Zoom/Skype/WhatsApp, etc), and we are all in need of community even if it’s digital, taking on a new form that we are not used to, from the comfort of our own homes right now. Keep in mind that what you are experiencing is probably quite similar to others that you know. Sharing this can be powerful for all of us as we wade through this time.

Shift:

Shift perspective, see what opportunities now present themselves personally and professionally. This can be an incredibly creative time for visioning and growth. Keep in mind to go at your own pace; everyone is going to have their views, opinions and process to navigate our current reality.

How can you shift your mindset to see a new way of navigating the current circumstance?

We will get through this with time. Spatial distancing, as I like to call this period, is key (I believe social distancing is misleading, we must remain social, but in a digital sense). Take care of yourself and others, we are all in this together, and this can be a powerful opportunity to forge deeper bonds and love.

Peace, love and health to you.
